HGSU-UAW Contract Ratified

December 1, 2021
Dear Members of the Harvard Community,

Members of the Harvard Graduate Students Union-United Auto Workers (HGSU-UAW) last week voted to ratify the four-year contract that the University and the union had tentatively agreed to on November 15. We are pleased that this new contract is now in place, effective through June 30, 2025.

The contract reflects the University’s strong and ongoing commitment to our student workers. It includes a $23.5 million increase in compensation and benefits above the previous HGSU-UAW contract. It also puts in place added procedures for recourse in matters of harassment and discrimination. These and other provisions address the priorities that HGSU-UAW brought to the negotiations.

We will post a copy of the final contract in the coming weeks, but for now you can read about key contract provisions on the Provost’s Office website. The Provost’s Office and the Office of Labor and Employee Relations are beginning to work on implementation of the contract. Please direct any questions to studentunionization@harvard.edu.

This new contract is the culmination of nearly nine months of intense, often difficult negotiations. At the end of this process, though, we have reached agreement on a contract that recognizes the important role our student workers have in Harvard’s academic and research mission and will contribute to their success.

Sincerely,

Alan M. Garber
Provost
